By the end of May of each year, by decision of the Assembly following a recommendation from the Coordinating Committee, a vacancy announcement is published and candidates are invited to submit their applications for candidacy in the specialization of their preference. Applications are submitted by the deadline and in the manner provided for in the respective announcement.
Candidates for Admission
Holders of bachelor degrees from higher education institutions located in Greece and abroad, in particular graduates from the Departments of Journalism, Media or Communication, as well as humanities and social sciences graduates, can be admitted to the Master Program. In the case of candidates who hold a first cycle degree from a foreign country, the Secretariat of the Program, in accordance with the provisions of the applicable legislation, checks whether the institution of origin is included in the National Register of Recognised Foreign Institutions.
Number of admitted candidates
The number of students admitted per year has been set at a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 40 students, and more precisely at 20 students per specialization. The number of admissions on the basis of their degree shall be distributed as follows: 70% for holders of a degree in Journalism, Media and Communication, and 30% for humanities and social sciences graduates. In case a category is not filled due to absence or failure of candidates, these places can be allocated to the other category based on ranking order generated by the marking procedure. If the prescribed number of places in a particular category is not covered due to lack of applications or failure of candidates, these places may be allocated to the other specialization by decision of the Coordinating Committee.
Necessary documents
Candidates should submit their applications to the Program’s secretariat where they should indicate the specialization they wish to pursue and submit the following documents
- A copy of their bachelor degree
- A transcript of records
- A certificate confirming the knowledge of at least one foreign language at B2 level (good knowledge). In case of a second foreign language, students must also submit the corresponding certificate. For Slavic languages, a certificate from the Institute for Balkan Studies or a diploma from a recognized institution should be submited. Foreigners are required to submit a certificate of proficiency in Greek language from the School of Modern Greek Language of a Higher Education Institute. In case they are graduates of a Greek-speaking university department, this degree also serves as a certificate of Greek language
- Evidence of any research and writing activity, participation in educational programs of student mobility, as well as professional experience relevant to the field of specialization
- Curriculum vitae
- Two (2) Letters of recommendation preferably from faculty members of universities or recognized research institutes.
Admission procedure
A three-member selection committee, appointed by the General Assembly of the Department, draws up a complete list of all candidates for each specialization and after the relevant check, rejects those who do not meet the minimum criteria set by the Department, and invites to an interview the qualified candidates who meet the prerequisites. The selection of candidates is based on the total number of points obtained by taking into account the following criteria:
- Overall bachelor degree grade, 25%
- Any research and writing activity (including thesis or dissertation), as well as participation in student mobility training programs, 10%
- Any professional experience, 10%. The experience must have been acquired in an organization of private, public or wider public sector and in a field related to the specializations of the postgraduate program: print, audiovisual or online media, news agencies, press offices, communication organisations, cultural organisations and institutions in general, cultural management and political communication organizations
- Certified knowledge of a second foreign language at least at A2 level (i.e. basic knowledge), 5%
- Possession of a second degree, 5%
- Grades in undergraduate courses relevant to the subject of the preferred specialization, 5%
- Any other postgraduate or doctoral degree, 10%
- Oral interview, 30%. In particular, candidate performance in the oral interview will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria: (i) analytical thinking and ability to address in a scientifically justified and methodologically consistent manner, issues relevant to the subject of the preferred specialization of the Program and the development of relevant argumentation; (ii) the degree of understanding by the candidates of the issues developed in the literature predefined by the Program’s announcement; and (iii) the relevance of candidate scientific interests to the subject of the Master Program
A prerequisite for the admission of a candidate to the Program is to obtain at least 50% of the maximum score that can be obtained from the interview.
Enrollment procedure
Enrollment of new students of the Postgraduate Program is carried out electronically, in the environment https://enrollment.auth.gr/.
Instructions
STEP 1 Students enter the website https://enrollment.auth.gr/ and go to the New User and Registration option, where they complete the registration form and set a username and password. (ATTENTION: This registration is the first step of the registration process).
STEP 2 Upon completion of the enrollment process, students go to the electronic secretariat environment of the postgraduate study program and specifically to the field of registration applications and select: a) Application to a Study Program, b) Level of study (Postgraduate), c) Study Program (defined by the Secretariat) and d) Next – Where they go to the field for filling in their details. (The application automatically converts characters to lowercase. Mandatory fields are marked with an asterisk *).
STEP 3 When the mandatory information is completed, the Next option is highlighted, where they go to the field for submitting the following supporting documents:
Application for registration in the Postgraduate Studies Programme “Communication” filled, signed and certified as authentic (the application can be found on the Postgraduate website in Useful Forms)
Copy of degree
Police ID/Passport
ID-type photograph
For each supporting document, there is a field where the student uploads the corresponding file.
When the supporting documents are completed and uploaded, the Submit option is highlighted, and the application can be submitted.
When the application is approved by the Secretariat, students become active and receive, on the mobile phone they registered, an SMS with instructions for activating an institutional account, academic identity and access to the AUTH electronic services.
